Watercolour Joy
This edition of Artist's Corner shines a light on watercolour artist Francesca Avery, as she opens up about what brings her joy when she paints. For Francesca, that joy starts with the paper and she's found her perfect match in Hahnemühle's Watercolour Joy range, giving her the texture and control she needs to bring her colours to life.
This summer, Francesca has taken her sketchbook on the road, capturing some truly stunning locations along the way. Read more to discover where her brush has taken her, and how Hahnemühle paper has become an essential part of her creative process.
You were recently challenged to paint works that brought you joy using the watercolour set. What did you paint, and why did you choose that subject?
"My most recent collaboration with Hahnemühle was painting football illustrations to celebrate the World Cup! I love being able to keep the themes of my illustrations current, so this was a great opportunity to capture the excitement of a global event. I've also created coastal illustrations this month, inspired by a Rhode Island summer (currently at the top of my travel bucket list!) along with painting elements of Pavilion Road in Chelsea, London - Who knew a road could be so picturesque?!"
Why is it important to you to use a quality medium, like Hahnemühle paper, when creating your work?
"Using high quality materials and tools is so important for me, as I always want my work to be presented in the best way possible. As an artist, the aim is to have materials which work with you not against you! Whenever I use Hahnemühle paper it's always of such high quality: it shows the true pigment of the paint and blends incredibly well, which makes my watercolour process feel effortless."
We have seen your beautiful live urban sketching, what draws you to painting on location surrounded by architecture?
"I love being able to factor in a live painting day into my schedule when i can, there's just something about seeing beautiful buildings and architecture in real life that i find really inspiring! I spend a lot of time in London, but for the most part i'm at work or on the move, so it's great when i get to take the time to stop and appreciate the amazing buildings which London is home to. Inspiration is quite literally everywhere you go, you just have to take the time to stop and notice it! I also find painting in public a great way to build my confidence as an artist, it can sometimes be a little nerve racking, however once you overcome that initial hesitation, it's great! I'm always surprised at how many people come over to chat and ask about what i'm creating!"
If you could describe your work in 3 words, what words would you use and why?
"Whimsical - The same version of your house, first date spot or wedding venue, but much more vibrant and beautiful!
Sentimental - Being able to capture so many memories for people on paper will always be something that makes my job extra special.
Calming - I've often been told that people find my painting process videos quite relaxing to watch, which is always so lovely to hear!"
